Sorry if this has already been answered...

I am going to be upgrading my PwrBook G4 notebook from an 80GB to a 320GB hard drive. There are a few things I have heard and read that I want to find out for sure.

1. A bootlable copy (CCC or SuperDuper) can only be used with a external drive with Firewire because USB is too slow.

If this is the case, can I still use CCC to my external drive (USB) and then use the Mac OS CD to boot and move the material to the new drive?

If so, how would I do so?

Thanks for all your help:D

No, but you can use CCC to clone your system to the ext. HDD, then install the new HDD.

Then you install your OS onto the new harddrive, and Migrate Data from the Ext. HDD to your Mac.

to be honest I am not sure if you can clone your system to your new hard drive via usb ..

what version of PB do you have .. if its older USB 1.0 could
take forever (lol)

It won't hurt to try though if you can put your new hard drive in an ext
enclosure (usb) and use SuperDuper (is what I use) then just put your new
hard drive in the system if everything worked correctly it will boot up just like
you left it on the old hard drive.

Thanks for your help.

I was doing a little more digging today and I think I will be getting an enclosure. They're relatively inexpensive, $25-$30. Then I could use my Firewire. I also saw that I should be able to use Disk Utility to clone the drive. Has anyone ever used it for that purpose?

too cool you will be happy with the FireWire enclosure and now you will have a
back up drive as well for the important stuff..

Have never used the Disk Utility to make images for this I use superduper.. its
FREE and very easy to use and once you have imaged your system it will boot
to the external enclosure so you can test and make sure it did every thing
right

Then just put it in to your PB and off you go.
