When i got my MacBook I added 512MB ram to total up to 1Gig. Look at what my ram is like with running no programs. Is that normal? Restarting the computer resets the ram back to a normal level

Yes, that is perfectly normal. OS X keeps certain things in RAM so that apps you've used recently (and thus are likely to use again) will boot more quickly. Wired is what RAM is actually in use so you're using 1/3 of your RAM. Active is RAM assigned to recent tasks that can be overwritten if you open a new app or something. Inactive is RAM that hasn't been used in a long time and can also be written over. Free (which activity monitor doesn't show, it just shows how much total is in use by those 3 fields) is how much RAM has nothing written to it yet.
