I'd get the MBP if you plan on having the computer for a bit and possibly upgrading. The MacBook has a limit of 4GB RAM, no backlit keyboard, no SD Card slot, and it doesn't have the cool looking aluminum body. I'm sure there are other things that it doesn't have, but those would be the main points for me.

No Firewire ports, so your fastest external bus connection is lowly USB 2.0.

USB 3.0 can't get here fast enough!

Base model has 2gb of RAM and a 160gb HD. Oh, and I'm from Earth.

I do apologize. I was building the 17" model and that one is true to what I said. I guess I went straight for that one to check it out since it's what I got.

Um, nto a smart idea. A lot of those updates are security fixes and you'd leave your Windows more vulnerable. Not a smart idea with Windows unless you want to get powned.

Just because you disable automatic updates doesn't mean you can't get the updates still. It just means the computer won't choose when it wants to update, you will by going to Windows update and getting the updates.

I have one. Best investment ever!

If you're getting a refurb, be sure to spend the money you've saved on a hard drive and some RAM. I just did the upgrade on mine for less than $170 from NewEgg.

Buy what you need when you need it. That's all there is to buying a computer.

If you don't need Firewire, SD card slot, and a backlit keyboard then you made a good choice.

Way... way too many specs to list.
There's one in the other room.. I like it, still use my 08 pro though, I use the expresscard so it'll be a very, very long time before I 'upgrade' this machine.

I don't get why anyone would buy the base MBP because the MB is basically the same thing for $200 less.

Cause it has a backlit keyboard, firewire, and an SD card slot.

Plus they like to obsess over dents and scratches obviously.

Is there still a discrete video card difference?

I love every scratch and dent on my mbp.. now it's time for stickers ;)

What he said.

I bought a 15" mbp, thinking more is better, but I found after using a friends white macbook that it did everything plus more than what I use my mbp for. Don't get me wrong, I love my mbp, but for what i need, the macbook would be perfect.

Change my answer to yes i HAVE bought one, and i love it.

My old white macbook died about a week ago so it was just in time and it was exactly what i wanted. It feels more solid and everything is just better quality than the old macbooks. I didnt really like the aluminum macbook pro's so luckily apple just came out with the new polycarbonate unibody.

If you have any questions about it i'd be glad to answer.

No they both use the same GPU. Only the 15" and 17" have the option for a discrete video card.

I upgraded my HD to 500GB 7200rpm and 4gb of ram and it is perfect.

How is the heat and temperature after upgrading. And how is the speed?

I plan to upgrade my MPB also. I have not decided, which HD and RAM to buy :)

This thread is over a year old, and even though the OP never got back to us with what he/she ended up going with, I'm certain that your post is a little late :p
