If you made a backup of your disk with either Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner, then the system should be in tact on the clone, assuming you restore it properly.

with a powerbook I have never figured out how to use USB for boot devices.

I know folks have said its possible.. but I have not investigated it ..

My suggestion is to get a cheap external enclosure firewire (20$)
put your new hard drive in it .. and Use SuperDuper to clone your existing
hard drive. it is very simple and straight forward to use.

SuperDuper!

was and I think still free to clone.

then after it reboots to the external drive test every thing out .. then
put it in to your PB and you are ready to go..

Isn't there a way to boot from the OS X install/restore disc that came with your machine.... oh. Never mind, you're missing it. Umm..... crap.

I would go this route. I did exactly what this man said. Essentially you are cloning your HD and you don't need the OS install disks. And it basically picks up from where you left off. here is a video tutorial that one of our members here made that I followed and it made it really easy.

I know you have a diff macbook but follow the steps of cloning the HD and you should be able to get it if you are a visual learner.

YouTube - Guide: How To Clone Hard Drive : For Apple MacBook / MacBook Pro Hard Drive Upgrade Using SuperDuper

hope this helps.
