My System Prefernces and mail have question marks on them?

and wont let me open it what can I do?

I am having a problem with my toolbar

Okay so at the bottom of my screen my "mail" Icon and my System Preferences Icon have "?" over it, the question marks will not allow me to enter either of the icons.

please help

If there is a question mark over them, it's because the app has either moved or it has been deleted. Did you remove Mail and System Preferences from your Applications folder?

Yeah they aren't in the applications place anything I can do to get them back?

insert your mac OSX install disk...
from there you can restore applications!!

As Zigdog said, insert the OS X install disc... or the "additional software" disc that came with your mac. If not, there's gotta be some place on Apple's site to download their basic OS apps.

Check your trash can. In the beginning I was inadvertently deleting apps and found them in the trash. From there you can return them to their rightful place.

Knowing which OS you have would help us to help you.

Since I'm currently running Snow Leopard - that's what I'll advise you on.

With SL, you can insert your SL disc, open up the Optional Installs package where you'll be able to re-install Mail.

To reinstall System Preferences, you're either going to have to re-install SL, or you'll need to get Pacifist.

Pretty sure the scenario is the same for Leopard also.
