Hey guys,

Got a problem with my DVD player. So I have a MacBook 2,1.

MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8221:

Firmware Revision: GA0J
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

I tried different CDs out and this is what I get.

DVD Video - Works
DVD Data (contains a program) - Works
DVD Data (contains videos) - DOES NOT WORK
CD Data (contains videos) - Works

The DVD Data (contains videos) worked in my MacBook before and it currently works on my cousin's MacBook, it just won't load for me. It'll take it the disk, process it and then eject it.

* Also, is it possible for me to upgrade into a DVD burner?

Any idea what's wrong?

He's referring to an optical drive cleaning kit. You can purchase one at stores which sell computer accessories. Best Buy, Radio Shack, Office Depot, Staples, etc.

Try that first. If cleaning doesn't work, the problem could be with the optical circuitry. More power is needed to read DVD media than CD media which is why that's usually the first thing to fail. And yes, you can replace that drive with one that burns DVDs.

Regards.

You should take care with these types of DVD / Superdrive cleaners especially with the most recent devices as they can be easily and accidently damaged. I would seek a Mac repairs specialists help and advice... most provide a free diagnosis with no fix, no fee type of service which you could take advantage of and ask them to test, evaulate and diagnose the problem before diving in yourself... If you're in London, UK maybe look up and try MacEmergency who provide Apple Mac repairs and support ;)

Toothpaste on a disk, leave it to dry, then with a soft cloth wipe off... for EXEPTIONAL results use T-Cut in the same fashion...
