OSX 6 Snow leopard

I am unable to install from the DVD as it will not allow me to install onto my Hard drive (internal). It claims that this hard drive is being used by Time Machine. That's incorrect. I went to Disk Utility and verified both disks and assigned the first HD as the main HD that i use. the second named HD Macintosh is where Time Machine is set to go to.

I have turned Time Machine off, changed the Hard Disk to the backup HD but yet, my Mac will not allow me to install the new operating systems SNOW LEOPARD to my Mac.

Any ideas.

Will assume this is an Intel MacBook.

Disconnect the external drive during the upgrade.

To add to what Bobtomay replied to you..... After getting Snow Leopard installed, rename that external hard drive to something else. Having both drives named as MacIntosh HD is a disaster waiting to happen. Rename it to "TM Backup" or something similar. You do that from Disk Utility.
