Deleting audio from multiple clips

I've made a nice little sequence using green screen in Imovie09. However, both the green screen clip (a view thru the back window of a car) and the background clip (a forest road) have sound on them that I want to delete so I can add an engine noise sound effect. However, I can't. I can delete the sound from the clips but adding a sound effect just brings the original annoying audio back. No amount of fiddling about with the volume and the ducking seems to work.
Does anyone know a way round this or is just an annoying bug that I'm going to have to put up with (and reshoot the green screen clip with the mic muffled)?

Thanks for the reply. Had a look at the link. Not sure it's what I want. Is it not more for recovering deleted sound rather than deleting it?

You could export the video from Quicktime Player 7 without sound. Choose File>Export and click the Options button. Uncheck the "Sound" settings and export.
