I'm running Windows Vista using a separate Boot Camp partition and upgraded my OS X to Snow Leopard. Everything seems to be working fine so, my question is....is it really necessary to upgrade the Windows drivers using the Snow Leopard CD or, since everything seems to be working, should I just leave the Leopards ones in place?

If everything is working fine - leave it be.

I can't see any harm in updating to the latest drivers. Updating to the latest Boot Camp (3.0) in Windows is well worth the upgrade since the trackpad single and double tap to click is now functional in Windows.

Let me re-phrase:

I'd be installing the latest drivers. I am typically willing to take whatever hit there may be by being the first to install something.

There is no reason you need to do so with a machine functioning to your satisfaction.

Thanks for the replies....I'll leave well enough alone!

Might be a stupid question, but how do I know what version of Boot Camp I have....did Snow Leopard automatically upgrade it to the newest version?

Thanks again...

Snow Leopard will have BootCamp Assistant 3.0 installed by default.

Then there is the version of BootCamp (drivers) you have installed in Windows.
Been awhile since I used it, but I believe it was originally 2.0 with Leopard and there was an update available to 2.1. Am not sure, but I don't think there is an update to BC 3.0 from within Windows. Someone running Windows will have to confirm. There have been reports of those installing the SL BC 3.0 in their existing Windows installation with audio issues and having to roll back to 2.1 to fix it.

To know what version you have in Windows, I believe you can click on it's icon in the task bar.

Bobtomay is correct. There currently is no update version of BC 3.0 available for download from Apple. Perhaps later on there will be, but for now the only way is to install it from the BC assistant provided with Snow Leopard.

I'm going to be testing that out next month when I receive my pre-ordered copy of Windows 7 from NewEgg.

Regards.

Upgrade Boot Camp

I recently upgraded my OS X to Snow Leopard but when I checked the version of Boot Camp I was using when running windows, it says I'm using version 2.1. Is there a way to upgrade my version to 3.0? (I thought SL would do it automatically, but apparently it didn't!) Thanks!

You need to insert the SL disk while in Windows - it should autorun. If it doesn't, just use windows explorer to browse the DVD and look for the windows files on the disk. (Upgrading the OSX side doesn't upgrade anything on the windows side unless you do it this way.)

Was that suppose to happen?

I'm so glad people are already talking about this.

I Did just update the Windows drivers using the Snow Leopard CD and this is what happened: (Very Strange)

I did what I was told/had read was the proper way to do this. I went into Windows (XP Home Ed.) and put in the CD. I simply selected the option to install drivers from BootCamp 3.0.

First, it took a while uninstalling previous drivers, then reinstalling updated drivers. I was so happy to have full use of my track pad. I restarted into Windows and so no noticeable visual difference which I was also hoping for since XP looks....bright for lack of a better word. (and no its nothing I can change in settings, its just wrong, lets not get into that)

Anyways, I log in to OS X this morning and my previously untitled Windows partition is GONE, replaced by a partition simply named BOOTCAMP, its the same thing (no, I didn't leave the CD in). It opens to reveal documents and folder etc. but it has been moved and is now called BootCamp. I haven't read about this before and I have been reading everything! I still can't change the name.

Anyone else?

I have a 13 inch MacBook with an Intel 2.4 processor btw if that helps.

Thanks

Yea, the SL upgrade does rename the windows partition to BOOTCAMP. This can break links you may have that reference the windows partition. All you have to do is go into windows, open up windows explorer and rename the volume to whatever it was before - mine was "Untitled" - this will restore all your references that pointed to "Untitled". It just renamed the partition - it didn't destroy any data or anything.
