My imac and my dvr

I have a bunch of stuff recorded on my set top dvr that I want to save a permanent copy of. What I would like to do (hopefyully) is to use my dvr as a source and "play" the content on my imac while it records on my imac. then I can burn it to a disc. any help is greatly appreciated.
