Ever since I found this g4 700MHz eMac, everything works perfectly, but the screen is very dark, especially when playing movies. I have the newest version of 10.4, but it was like that even before I updated to the newest. The screen brightness control works, but It won't brighten up any more.

Computer stats:
700MHz ppc G4
512 MB RAM, 384 or so when I found it.
Fully updated system.

Does this generation of eMacs just have dark screens?
Thanks in advance!

Your post indicates a problem with the CRT display, or the video card. Your comment about movies suggests to me that it's the video card. Try running Disk Utility > Hardware, preferably from a Tiger disk (rather than the internal HD).

A feature I've noticed in my own eMac (1.25), is that the monitor is significantly affected by external temperature. For example, if I'm away from home base for weeks, when I start the eMac after such a period, the display is very dark. However, after perhaps 30 minutes, it has returned to normal.

Re the PPC security update, try repairing permissions within the existing system (recommend using Onyx) and then retry the update. Another option might be to use a different download site (eg. MacUpdate or VersionTracker).

Perhaps it is just the age of the CRT monitor as it has been reported they do darken as they get older and the original eMac is now over seven years old alas. Here is one link and you will find many if you do a Google:-

Why is my monitor getting darker?

The video card is an old Nvidia GeForce2 Mx 32mb Vram.
However, it doesn't have any effect on video, except from choppy youtube. The crt's probably just getting old...

I'd suggest to you that it's the eMac processor that's contributing to the chopiness. Remember, it's only 700 MHz, and Flash format video was in its infancy when that eMac was produced. I'm currently using a 600 MHz G3, and YouTube videos are indeed choppy.

How well, or not, does your eMac show Quicktime format video?

It shows quicktime well enough, but that's because the emac version of quicktime is adapted for the low graphics card.
