The title pretty much says it all. Why does my iPod Touch open an .xls windows created excel spreadsheet, but my iMac doesn't? I am downloading Open Office now, but I'm just trying to understand why it works on the iPod, but not the iMac?

The iPod comes with the software to read Word and Excel docs by default. You can't create or edit them but you can read them. If you want to read them on a Mac you have to add MS Office or an equivalent. Pretty simple actually.

If you just need to look at them, you can always use Quick Look. Just highlight the file and press the spacebar.

You can also download OpenOffice to look at the files. Be warned that although compatibility is pretty good with Office files in OpenOffice, it's not perfect. It gets worse with Office 2007/2008 files but since it's free, it's worth a shot.
