So the title is confusing, but what I am trying to say is when I play my music I like how it is copied and I have no problem with that. The problem is when I play movies. If I have them on my external HDD can I keep them there without itunes copying the file and still viewing it?

If you set them up to be played by iTunes it's going to copy it to the iTunes folder ifyou have it set up to manage your Library.

Easiest way to do that is set those file types to be played with something other than iTunes. Quicktime, VLC, etc.
