My monitor has quit for the 2nd time on this desklamp so a techy friend of mine removed the monitor for me. I am now using a new external monitor & using the desklamp computer as sort of a mac-mini.

So she showed me the 512MB stick of DR2100 memory that is installed just underneath the cover of the base.

My question -- can I pull out that 512MB stick of memory & replace it with a 1024MB stick of DR2100 memory? newegg.com has it priced for $31.99

Should I also upgrade the memory installed right to the motherboard?

The reason for my question is that I would like to get this computer to run a little faster ... and upping the memory might be the most economical fix. Any & all suggestions are appreciated.

This is some of the info about my iMac
Machine Name: iMac
Machine Model: PowerMac6,1
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
Memory: 768 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.5.8f1

Running Mac OS 10.4.11

Your computer has 1 user accessible ram slot.

Check this out:

Apple iMac G4/1.0 17-Inch (Flat Panel) Specs (iMac 17" 1 GHz - M8935LL/A) @ EveryMac.com

As far as the "newegg" ram you mentioned...you better be sure it is compatible with Macintosh computers.

Other World Computing (a store I highly recommend)...sells 1 gig sticks of ram that you need for $42.99:

1.0GB (1024MB) PC2700 DDR SODIMM 200 P... (OWC2700DDRS1GBA) at OWC

OWC is usually very competitive with their prices...so with the $11.00 difference between Newegg & OWC...it's best to make sure the Newegg ram is Mac compatible. PC ram is not always compatible with Macs.

Hope this helps,

Never mind... saw it was a 1gig snowball. You may need to replace the internal ram to reach full capacity.

Yes I'm guessing you were thinking about the same thing I was going to mention in my previous post....that this iMac G4 is supposed to be capable of being upgraded to 2 gig of ram...but one of the slots is not very easy to access.

The user accessible slot is 200 pin ram...and the "less" user accessible slot is 184 pin ram.

I would have thought that 768 is quite satis for 10.4.11 unless you have heaps of apps open and or heavy duty video work. Will you really get a noticeable speed improvement over what u have - might be better to save the $$ for future upgrade from G4

The user accessible slot is 200 pin ram ** per your post...

so if I pull that ram ... can I install?
1GB(1024MB) 200 Pin PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM SO-DIMM

and if I get really ambitious ...
the "less" user accessible slot is 184 pin ram
I could install:
1GB PC2700 DDR 333MHz CAS 2.5 184 Pin DIMM

You got me a little confused:Confused:

That would be my understanding.

If you want to keep things less confusing...just install 1 gig into the 200 pin "user accessible" slot.
