Snow Leopard: Bluetooth Preference Pane Missing

Found out mine was missing today. If this happens to you after the SL upgrade - you'll need to do an SMC reset on your machine.

As always - read through and understand the direction prior to starting

Machines with removable batteries:

1. Turn off your computer
2. Remove the power adapter and all peripherals.
3. Take out the battery
4. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds
5. Put the battery back in and connect the power
6. Turn machine back on

Machines with non-removable batteries

1. Turn off your computer - do not do a SMC reset while your machine is turned on - you could experience file structure damage
2. Connect the power adapter
3. On the built in keyboard - on the Left hand side of the Keyboard - Press Shift-Control-Option along with the power button "once".
4. Wait for 5 seconds afterward - then press the power button to turn the machine on

Since upgrading to snow leopard I've had this happen a couple times now. Today it happened twice, so I called Apple. After a chat with support, and his subsequent chat with a product specialist (while I don't mind their 1st level folk I'd really prefer to deal with 3rd level or dev directly.. what can I say I'm spoiled and prefer to speak to peers ) I had a genius bar appointment setup to replace the bluetooth board.

Not entirely related, but I noticed that Network Utility crashes immediately upon opening. Can't get it to start at all. After a bit of Googling, it seems like this is a common bug in SL.

Have you tried running SP in 32-bit mode? It's not really a fix but it might do the job as a workaround for now.

SP? Am I being dense?

No, I've just lost my mind. I read Network pref pane (got confused with Network and earlier posts about System Preferences) and you meant Network Utility. Can you tell I've had a long day?

Regardless, you could give 32-bit mode a try. I don't think it will make a difference but it can't hurt.

I just used the network utility today to do a "PING". Seemed to work OK, no crash. Did you do an upgrade install to SL or a clean install? I did a clean install although I don't know if that will make a difference or not.

Clean install. Also, running in 32-bit mode doesn't work.

I'm actually paging through a thread on the Apple Support Forums right now and it seems this is quite common.

I'm wondering if this is related to Fusion, since it has many virtual NICs. To make matters worse, I'm also running beta of that product.

I'll let you know in a couple of days.

Just played with NU for a while and no issue here - def on an upgrade install - will have a copy of fusion finally so maybe can test that out.

Need to do a fresh install though. Have been watching activity monitor and have multiple programs being called/trying to launch that are no longer on my computer including some remnant of Paragon's Snapshot that I haven't found yet.

Has anyone tried importing your Leopard login keychain into SL?
