Hey guys -- can anyone tell me if my PowerPoint presentations that I put together using a PC and Microsoft Office (older version) would be compatible with the 2008 Office for Mac version? I just wanted to check with you guys first before I tried it and potentially screwed something up!

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it is backward compatible to the older MS Office file types.

You'll be fine. You will run into trouble however if you save a file using the new Open Office XML format (default for 2007/2008) and try to open it in an older version of Office if the compatibility pack isn't installed (I don't know if there is a compatibility pack for older versions of Office for Mac). These files have the .docx (Word), .pptx (Powerpoint) and .xlsx (Excel) file extensions.

Yeah you'll be fine just save everything as .doc, .ppt, or .xls, if you wanna be safe those are compatible with everything :).

Note though that certain things are available to you if you save with the new OOXML format that aren't in the old format. If you decide to save it in the old format (doc/ppt/xls), be sure to run a compatibility check first. I know this isn't what you asked but it's good to know for future reference.
