I'm thinking about skipping 10.4 altogether when I heard that it was "theoretically" possible to install 10.5 on a G4. Right now I have 512mb ram, which will be upgraded to either 2gb or 4gb. I also have a 500gb sATA HD, and eventual video card upgrade as well as AirPort Extreme. It also has dual 1.25GHz processours. To give you a visual; it's the Mirroured drive bay model.

It has 10.2.8 on it right now.

How does this sound?

There's nothing theoretical about it.
If you've got the DVD drive, you're set.

I already read that, but I posted because I read other places that 10.4 was the latest OS X version. I also read on Apple's site that 2gb of memory was the most, yet my friend who sold this Apple to me said that Apple sometimes understates things, and this should be able to support 8gb ram.

Are you asking if you can install 10.5 or are you asking what the maximum RAM upgrade is for your computer?

It will support OS X 10.5 Leopard.

It will allow you to install a maximum of 2GB of RAM.

It will not support 8GB of RAM or even 4GB of RAM.

Not sure what you mean by:

Well obviously this isn't correct...because both 10.5 & 10.6 exist (but 10.5 is the most a G4 can be updated to).

10.5 only requires 512meg...but a ram upgrade to 1.0 or 1.5 gig would probably be a good idea.

And like "D3v1L80Y" already mentioned...your G4 dual 1.25ghz can hold 2.0 gig of ram...but will definitely not support 8 gig of ram!

Hope this helps,

- Nick

Off to the Apple store soon (in the mall *shudders*, but not just going for myself) to check out all the stuff, and maybe ask a few questions now that they actually pertain to my situation.

As a suggestion do not bother spending money on a SATA controller card for the MDD. Set you back quite a bit as SATA will not work in a MDD without the PCI Controller Card. Then it is not that quicker as the machine is still bounded by the system bus speed.

Better off IMHO putting 4 x 512MB Apple ram such as this in and then installing Leopard and updating to OS X.5.8:-

Memory Upgrades for your Apple PowerMac G4 "Mirrored Drive Doors" 2x1.25GHz at OtherWorldComputing.com

And don't buy memory from the Apple store. Look at OWC prices first an d see if you can match them. PC low density memory will not work in your MDD.

Your G4 is an older machine and will not accept 1GB modules. a 512MB PC2700 is the most each memory slot will take and still work. You need 4 512MB PC2700's if you want to max it out. The 1gb modules will not work.

Ok, I'll just go back to pricewatch and get the 512mb. I hope it's the same price as the company in the link you gave me.

And get a 100% money back guaranty it is Apple Mac compatible as mostly PC memory will not work - different density and rating and G4's are particularly fussy.
