I thought quicktime X was supposed to play avis?

Every time I try I get this:



I've uninstalled flip4mac, rebooted, installed the new beta flip4mac that is supposed to work in snow leopard and still bubkiss... QT7 (which I installed for such instances) still works though. Any ideas?

It might be something to do with Perian. I was able to play AVI's though on my Intel Mac with QT10x.

The AVI support was always Perian and not Flip4Mac as far as I know.

well, uninstalling perian and rebooting didn't solve it. All this rebooting today I'm beginning to feel like I'm running windows.


BTW still runs in quicktime 7, without perian.

Did you install the new version of perian?

Well, it's not ideal.. but I've just forced it to use quicktime player 7. Must be a codec issue.

the version I had uninstalled was 1.1.4.. although I could try it again. After my meeting


Bugger that, I just redownloaded and installed.. no change.

All I know is a couple of AVI's played but AVI's can be very different also. I will do some testing and get back to you.

unfortunately this is the first AVI I've tried to play. Go figure.

Ok Mike, here is what I found for now. They play fine in Safari in SL which is running in 64 Bit mode (Safari) but if I download the video in either AVI or converted to QT it will not play in QuicktimeX. BUT all my AVIs (Some movies shot by my Canon Camera in AVI, Converted video tapes using my Plextor ConvertX, Movies I have edited for friends and saved to AVI all play in Quicktime X. Only plugin is Perian. So it has to be some codec issue with Snow Leopard/Quicktime X and the AVI in your URL.

If I can figure out a way I will get back to you.

Just to help (or complicate things depending how you look at it), I tried this myself. With QTX and only Perian installed, it wouldn't work (got same error you did). With VLC, I got a blank screen but it played the 1.5 seconds or so. I tried it in DivX player and it worked like a charm (assuming there is no sound). I tried running QTX in 32-bit mode wondering if this was another one of those idiosyncrasies of 64-bit execution but it wasn't.

While I know this might be a pain, have you thought about converting the file using something like ffmpeg to a more QTX friendly format?

Van, what was interesting is I tried converting it in QT Pro 7 to quicktime and it still got that error in QTx.

I will mess with FFmpeg also for the fun of it. Nothing else to do tonight.

Also Van, does FFmpeg run ok in SL? Not tried it as yet.

I'm compiling ffmpeg right now (which I should have done a while ago with ImageMagick anyway) so I'll let you know. I can't imagine I'll encounter too many errors so I'll give it a shot once it's done.

Did QT7 convert it without error? If so, I'm wondering how backwards compatible QTX is. You would think that QT would move forward in terms of codec support.

Alright, ffmpeg is done building and I just converted the file to an mpeg4 with no problems. I used the example here and converted as such: Works like a charm in QTX. MY only problem now is trying to figure out exactly what the video is.

I did the same here but converted to an AVI with DIVX and it came right up in Quicktime X.

Had to install Rosseta though for some of the Binaries. I used the GUI version. I am sure you used the Terminal one.

And Van, I was wondering the same thing about the video!

Thanks guys! I figured it had to be a codec issue.. now I'll putz with it more.. now that I'm done with work and hit the gym.. and now back to a place where I don't mind putzing.
