hi.

all of a sudden when trying to send mail, a box keeps popping up saying:

The SMTP server “smtp.mac.com” rejected the password for user “samjones23”

Please re-enter your password, or cancel.

What is this? My mail was working fine earlier.

Just give it some time - if you have made no changes related to your mail and/or network settings since it worked a couple hours ago - the issue is probably on their end.

something to do with mobile me?

they are asking for new card details. I wasnt aware that it was a yearly subscription for me mac.com email.

im entering new card details but they are giving me a me.com email instead.

will my mail work if i decide to not subscribe?

.mac mail or .me as it's called now, is a part of their mobileme service.
No, it will not work if you are not a subscriber.

I do not know the ramifications pertaining to your existing e-mail addresses if you allow the service to expire.
