How do I open a .rar file ?

I need to open a .rar file. How do I open it ? Which program do I use ? I have tried to download RAR 3.90 but it does not work or may be I don't know how to install it

Stuffit is pretty much the biggest and most popular archive utility for the mac. Stuffit will unpack nearly everything, except for 7zip.

There is also unrarx - UnRarX - Mac OS X RAR Extraction Utility I use from time to time when I run across stubborn rars that stuffit can't read correctly.

UnrarX or The Unarchiver here too. Unarchiver will do 7zip.

Assuming you got rar from here, rar/unrar are command line applications so you would have to use the command line (Terminal). If you are new to OS X/Unix, you would be better served by the applications suggested by Ghostshadow.
