Installed this in my new MBP 13" base model a couple of weeks ago. It's working fine. However, it does boot up differently from the stock drive. It takes about 57 seconds to boot, and first shows a gray screen and then the Apple logo shows up with the spinning circle. With the stock drive, the Apple logo came up first. By the way, I cloned the Hitachi from the stock drive using Super Duper.

Just curious as to why the boot seems a tad slower, and the logo comes up later rather than sooner. Any thoughts?

I've found that when changing drives, the PRAM needs a reset to restore the boot time.

Do this by turning the machine off, turn it back on and immediately press and hold Command+Option+P+R and continue holding until you hear the system chime 3 times.

That should do the trick.

Good luck with that Hitachi drive, be sure to make regular backups.

i would like to know why under 'about this mac' my serial-ata appears as Rotational Rate: 5400. Mine is a hitachi 320GB 7200RPM HDD. but it appears as 5400.

For whatever reason your drive is reporting its spindle speed as 5400rpm. What you're seeing is the information the drive is providing to the bus.

What model is the drive?

model? im not too sure. but on the packaging it says

im pretty sure its a 7200rpm, judging by the boot speed and all, unless the drastic improvement is due solely to snow leopard. :S

Oops, bummer.

Any chance you can exchange that drive for a different one? If so, might I suggest a Western Digital or a Seagate? Longer warranties, better performance, better reliability. Just my opinion, formulated after years of experience with hundreds of notebooks in my line of work.

Whew, that scared me! I checked and my rationale rate is 7200rpms just had to double check.

To OP and cwa107, I had a similar problem as well. I just installed my drive from doing super duper and all and it ended up sitting on the blank screen for a long time and then go to the apple and spin then load. I was like *** I put in a new fast drive! BUT, when I got snow leopard I did the upgrade and.... then all of a sudden it goes to booting really fast! So just letting you know from my own experience. But I am wondering if I could get an even faster boot time by doing ur little PRAM reset.... hmmmm but I don't wanna mess anything up.

I haven't upgraded to SL yet, but resetting the PRAM gives me about a 10-15 second boot time. Works like a gem.

p.s. I'm in Jax Beach. Small world.

just got a reply from the seller, he got a mix up. so im getting an exchange, to a western digital as you suggested. :) hopefully it all goes well now. only thing is i gotta re-shift everything back to the new drive. :( gotta reinstall everything
