Problem Connecting to Home Network

There are two different rooms in which I connect to the internet using my iBook. In one room, I connect straight through an ethernet connection that goes through a router, so:

cable modem => router => CAT5 wiring in my place => iBook

In the other room, I have two computers connected, so I go through an additional switch, so:

cable modem => router => CAT5 wiring => switch => iBook

I can connect when going through the switch, but when connecting more directly to the router, I don't get an ip address. That is, my ethernet connection registers something like a 'local address'.

Any ideas?
