File viewing options in Finder

In Finder the default viewing option is alphabetically. Often times I want to view a folder's contents by Date Modified, for example in my downloads folder.

Is there a way to permanently set different viewing options for different folders?

Or, is there a keyboard shortcut to change the viewing option? It certainly isn't as easy as in Windows where I can see all the information in a small bar above the files.

Under the View menu in the Finder, there is an Arrange By option that lets you view your files by date modified, by name, etc.

Next to each option is a keyboard shortcut. Control-Command-1 to view by name, Control-Command-2 to view by date modified, etc.

No way to assign one sorting option to 1 folder (e.g. date modified in Downloads) and another way to a separate folder (e.g. alphabetically to the Applications folder)

Right there is your answer. Set up each folder's view the way you want.
