I am planning on buying the 1TB Time Capsule. It was going to be a media server through which I would store on my music and DVD's and be able to access all of it and be able to stream it to any computer around my house.

I know I can always buy the Airport Extreme and plug in a hard drive, but it would be a lot more convenient if I do it this way.

My question is whether the Time Capsule works fully on it's own without being bridged to a modem. By working fully I mean connected straight to my phone line and me on my MBP being able to connect to the internet through it.

Thanks

No, the Time Capsule is not a modem. It is a router and hard drive combo.
You will need to attach it to the modem as you would with most all other routers.
