Hey folks. I was recently told that my G4 dual cannot run Leopard 10.5.8 effectively. I was pretty disappointed because I needed to run 10.5.8 to update to the newest version of Pro-Tools (8).

I ended up finding a solution in using my MacBook Pro but now I'm curious. Can it be done? Can I run 10.5.8 on a G4 dual? Will it run ok?

What do you think?

What are the specs on that MDD? CPU speed and RAM please.

Most MDD machines will run Leopard quite well.

I got to agree with "dtravis7"...I believe all MDD computers meet the requirements for 10.5.8.

But like with most OS updates...the faster your CPU the better.

When I wrote that I was pretty tired but yes, the lowest MDD CPU wise is a Dual 867Mhz, so leopard will install without issue.

:D

I think the main reason I asked for the specs is just in case of mistake and it was not an MDD.

I hear ya...Ha ha!:D

No such thing as a:

- 500mhz MDD
- or a MacBook Pro G3 733mhz
- or a Powerbook Core 2 duo 12" display
- or a Mac-Mini G4 Quad-Core

We've seen these described...but of course they don't exist!;D

My PowerMac G4 with Mirrored-Drive Doors has a 1.25 GHZ CPU w/ 1 MB (Left cache) and 256 KB (right cache) of RAM. Would that be powerful enough to run 10.5.8?

Yes it will run ok. 10.5 needs at least an 867Mhz G4 and you have a 1.25Ghz, so Leopard will run just fine.

How much RAM (Memory) is in your 1.25Ghz MDD?

Suggest for optimum results boosting memory out to the full 2GB as OS X in all forms is a bit of a hungry beast. You will be very pleased with leopard as it is fast and rock steady.

I believe I answered the question above: 1 MB in my left cache and 256 KB in my right cache so I think that's 1.256 MB total?

Does that make sense or am I wrong?

Disregard my previous post. I was confused. I have 1 Gig of Ram.

Up.. I'm hearing conflicting things from my local indie Mac shop. They say that the G4 will run 10.5 pretty slow.. What do you guys think?

G4 MDD 1.25ghz Dual 1mb L3 Per Proc 1GB

Hi All

I have a G4 MDD 1.25Ghz 1MB L3 Cache per Cpu, 80gb IBM Deathstar OSX Leopard 10.5.6 , 80 GB Maxtor 10.4.11 Tiger, 40GB Seagate Ubuntu 10.04.

I have a nvidia ti4600 128mb AGP card, extra PCI USB card, Orinoco PCMCIA wifi card, Samsung burners, Apple Keylargo KB.

Both Apple OSX's Work perfect. Ubuntu has no video Accelerated Drivers. So it's almost useless.

OS X Leopard Does run the CPU hotter, 139F idling., OS X Tiger runs at 127F idle , Yes some things run Slower in OS X Leopard 10.5.6 BUT THEY WORK!

As in Tiger most applications were very hard to find and get running because nobody develops ANYTHING for PPC Tiger OS X anymore. Unless its Universal Bit application.

I am tempted to upgrade to 10.5.8 But i'm not sure what the will happen?

Will it Crawl? or will it Crash?

The update is 768mb ouch!!

Regards,

Kevin in Costa Rica

Would help if you told us how much memory is installed. Suggest you use 4 x 512MB modules to run leopard. And Tiger is no longer supported by Apple alas.
