im downloading software in prep for the new mac, but ive came accross .dmg file, what is this? is it a mac file format? will it work on a mac? is it compressed?

Disk Copy Image File
A .dmg file is a Mac file [Disk Copy Image File]. It then opens another file that looks and 'acts' like a Hard Disk - or physical disk. It isn't but it 'acts' like one which then allows you to install the application. Once you have double-clicked the file - a window opens and you then drag the app icon to your Application folder to install it.

You will become very familiar with these once you start using your Mac for a little while.
Often when you download something it appears on your desktop as a Disk Image File. Double click the icon to "mount" the disk image and you will be able to see all its contents and can form there install whatever you need to. They are sort of treated as though they were a CD or Flash drive that you have just connected to your computer.
Ok, this is my quick stab at an explanation. Note however, that I am new to Mac as well so someone may come along and do a better job of explaining this for you.

After you have dragged the app, or copied whatever files you wanted out of it, you can unmount it, just like you would a real External HardDrive. You can do this by:
1: Dragging the icon of it from the desktop to the trash icon, which will magically turn into an ejectsymbol when you start dragging the dmg.
2: Click once to highlight the .dmg file, then press CMD(Apple Key) + E
3: In any finder Window, click the eject button to the right of its name in the sidebar.
