Why does this happen? What do I need to do to stop it?

Im trying to back up my MB's HDD so I can safely install Snow Leopard.
But this happens?
Is there any other way to back it up?
Instructions please?

Tell us about the external drive, if that is what you are backing up onto, how you formatted it, partitioned, connected etc?

If you have formatted the drive, does it appear on your desktop after connecting and powering up the external?
