iMac fans stay on when put to sleep...

After a long day's work with video editing my iMac's fan does not shut off when I put it to sleep or when i shut it down.

What happens is when I put it to sleep (display goes blank) the fan stays on for another minute - then the fans go FULL BLAST for another 5 seconds THEN the iMac goes to sleep (sleep light activates). Same thing when i shut it down. The computer shuts down (screen blank) yet the fans keep on for a min and then it shuts down.

What gives? It only seems to do this after a long hard days work of being on for 6hrs. Thanks!

your computer is very warm after doing hard core work like that...the fans run to cool it down. it is very normal for them to run for a few seconds after putting it to sleep or turning it off (you might not have noticed this at first though)

it is like if you went running and worked up a sweat and then you finish your run, it is going to take a few minutes for you to stop sweating and cool down...so you hop in the shower or something....this is exactly what the fans are doing

really? i thought it was a glitch! yes the area where the G5 processor is in gets H O T. I mean I get worried at how hot it gets but these things should be made for this stuff right?

I was worried it was a glitch. So there must be software that tells the fans to keep on for a for another min. ???? i hope so!

im sure that someone will correct me if i was wrong. there is a program out there (search versiontracker.com) that can tell you some temps on your processor. i do believe that it should run over a 100*F

its just cooling that sucker down

hmmm, its just that how would the system know to keep the fans on for another minute after being put to sleep, etc...

maybe i should re-set the prefs. but i don't know how!

coach z is right, it's just coolin' down (these computers are so, danged smart). Even my old imac (g4) ran a little long after I'd put it to sleep after working it hard. I'd say it's nothing to worry about. There are a bunch of temperature programs out there, so you can see what your core is at (how they work, i don't know? nor do i use them, but i hear good things).

you should barely even notice the fans running.

i know just after my last post i closed my PB and waited for the fans to turn off, threw it in my bag (well, not throw, but put) and then i heard the fans turn back on again (i have real good ears sometimes) by the time i figured it was not my fridge turning on, got it out of my bag my PB shut down (i assume because of the heat, but im going to start my own thread about this now)

I understand completely. I've only heard my imac when there's no one else in the house, but i hear the imac g5 can get pretty loud, in order to cool down the power. This might be a good thread. You start it and I'll join in.

well last night did some more DVD burning (3.5hrs of encoding) and when i was done i just did a restart. after that i put it to sleep and it went right to sleep.

i figure i should restart my iMac anyway after doing all that work just to clear out the junk yes?

watched a 2hr DVD on my iMac and it did the same thing. can anyone confirm this is normal behavior?

ok, this seems to be fixed but only by doing the following:

Unmount LaCie ---> Sleep iMac ----> TURN OFF LACIE.

I've been doing Unmount LaCie - Turn off LaCie - Sleep iMac, doing it this way results in the weird sleep habit.

Any ideas why?

I sent an email to LaCie describing this problem.

I also chatted online with an Apple support agent who said that it needed to be escalated to a specialist by phone as they need to "run a data capture and look at the log files" what does this mean?

The agent said its most likely a LaCie issue and to take it up with them. Its because for whatever reason the iMac is having difficulty communicating with the LaCie when attempting to sleep.

So I'll keep you guys updated as I can not call them until tonight but how do they run a data capture to look at the log files? just curious.

ok, its a LaCie problem. And they have no real solution over at LaCie except to update firmware which keeps saying I am already updated!?

Apple checked the Logs and said that the LaCie is not unmounting correctly... this is very odd. but they said its not going to hurt the iMac in any way (not sleeping right away).

edit--- GIVE UP, LaCie told me to go to the Apple Discussion site and look up, "G5 Deep Sleep firewire"

whatever, i guess i just have to live with this...

I think it`s called 'over-run' and is a good thing!
