Here is a nice helpful little list of which applications are working as of now for SL

Nice find gagnerants! I'm sure that list will get better this coming weekend. It's also nice to see that things like VirtualBox will only work if you have booted into a 32-bit kernel. That would save me some time trying to figure out the problem.

Exactly this is also part of the reason I posted it, hopefully it will slow down some of the *insert app* isn't working now in SL, what should I do threads.

Wow, that's a heck of a list! I'm obviously not into a lot of the 3rd party apps cause I think I have maybe 3 on that whole list. haha

I'd like to think it will but it won't. :)

Newbie. Question about Snow leopard.

Hey everyone, been lurking around here for awhile.
This is my first post here and I've got a few questions and I hope someone can answer them:

1. I've got an IMAC running on OSX Tiger 10.4. Will I be able to upgrade it to OSX Snow leopard without buying the OSX Snow leopard bundle and just getting the Snow leopard itself?

Attached is from apple uk website.

Can I just get option 1? I don't need iwork and ilife. Will it still run on my imac?

2. Thanks for the info about application compatibility. I noticed it says ADOBE CS2 won't run on Leopard? Is it the same case even if I already got CS2 installed and will install Leopard soon?

Thanks in advance, really appreciate it.

1. From all we know at the current time - No - You will either have to purchase option 2 or purchase Leopard and then the SL upgrade

2. Yes it is the same case, you would be changing your OS to Leopard.

Thanks very much for the quick reply bobtomay.

That's really bad news for me and a real pain buying the whole CS3 or CS4 package just because of an OS upgrade. Got my CS2 when I was a student.

Did apple deliberately do that kind of thing?
I'm not a whiz in hardwares and softwares but shouldn't it be the other way around? I mean if I get an OS upgrade, all previously released softwares should work on the new OS. And if I've got an old OS and installed new softwares there's a possibility it won't work?

Or am I just be talking rubbish, if that's the case then pls ignore this one. :)

Thanks

You really expect an OS to be designed around the literally hundreds of thousands of pieces of software that others have created. Alas, no. If this were the case we'd still have OSs not capable of doing much more than creating simple text documents and playing pong. And let's all go back to DOS and the command line instead of the great graphics and GUI we have today.

And if you have an old OS and want to purchase a new piece of software, it's up to the developer of the new software as to which OS they want to create for. Do you really want someone developing their software for a 20 yr old OS that would limit them to 16 colors and have none of the enhancements allowed by a modern OS?

Way... way too many specs to list.
No it's not the same. That being said, OS's must march forward, which means old applications become extinct.

Speaking of that, the link no longer works :( At least I know my CS4 install will continue to work ;)

And at the end of the day, or tomorrow for us down under, Apple state Snow Leopard is an UPDATE OF LEOPARD and not a completely new operating system.

Way too late for that kind of announce. At least in my experience in hw and sw product announcements/releases.
