hello :)
first off i just want to say what a great forum this is and i have found most of my questions answered in other threads;D

soon i will be getting the new macbook pro 13 inch laptop ;D

i really dont care if its a refurb or not :Smirk:
however on the refurb i was looking at
Refurbished MacBook Pro 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - Apple Store (U.S.)

has only a 160GB hard drive,

my question is, can i order the refurb from apple store and get them to upgrade to a 250 GB Harddrive possible 360GB.

i do light gaming such as sims 3 and spore [mainly those actually]
and want to do some light photo editing.

plus the idea of 160gb harddrive scares me quite frankly lol.

so anyways can i do it??

or should i get the Harddrive and install it myself..?...im not really a techy..

thank you

Apple should be glad to install a larger hard drive for you.
Call them and ask. Ask how much also.

All you can do is ask...and you won't know the answer until you ask Apple.

It's possible that refurbished computers may be handled or shipped by a different location or department within Apple...and thus they may not be able to customize refurbished computers...but you won't know until you ask.

BTW...why are are you scared of a 160gig hard drive?...it's not it's going to bite you!;D

No, Apple will not customize refurbished computers.

You can but the replacement drive and do it yourself.

I was kind of thinking that was the deal. Refurbished computer inventory can change daily or even hourly on the Apple website...you sort of have to want & purchase what they got...or customize it yourself.

Just wanted to remind you that if you decide to do this, it will void the 1 year warranty that comes with the computer, along with the APP (Applecare Protection Plan) if you choose to purchase it.

That depends on what you upgrade.

If the computer part you are looking to replace/upgrade falls under the DIY list for that model, then you have nothing to worry about.

And you can always get it done at an apple store ...
No, you can't. Apple will not customize or upgrade refurbished products they sell.

Many times, the entire reason they are "refurbished" is because they were customized orders that were cancelled by the buyer.

I purchased a "refurbished" G4 eMac some years ago like that.
A school had put in an order for 60 of them, then changed their minds and wanted iMacs instead. Apple sold the unwanted and customized eMacs on the refurb store.
You get it at the refurb cost because they aren't going to change anything about the computer for you.

but surely you can still buy yourself a new hard drive, take both along to the apple store and ask them nicely to fit it for you ... :-/

they won't even do it if you pay? :-?
that's surprising :p

you'd think they have enough spare time to play around with computers :p :I

Hmmm thanks for all the replies. They were helpfull

I think I'm going to get a brand new one then. Because I do want the choice of upgrading the harddrive and memory.
It's only like a $100.00 more for the brandnew anyways (with student discount)
just trying to be frugal..... And still get a mac :D

thanks again

I would sure think that if:

- you purchase a refurbished Mac from the Apple website
- then purchase separately a hard drive that you want
- then go to the Apple store
- and are willing to pay them to install it

I would think under these conditions they would install it.

I'm guessing maybe the "No the Apple Store won't install it" reply above was under the assumption the owner wanted the new or replacement hard drive installed for free.

Unless there's something I'm missing here,

i think ill just call an apple store and see tomorrow :D

That's absolutely the only way to be certain...and I'm sure each store has some variation on how they handle things.

So calling your local Apple Store is the best way to get the most correct answer.

Also...if you get an answer that you like...make sure you get the person's name that you speak with.

Just in case when you go to the store you end up with a different person, and they either don't know how to handle the request or give you a different answer.

Good luck,

Wow...that's pretty far! An 8-hour round trip to the Apple Store is quite an adventure. I can see why calling first to ask questions would be a VERY good idea!!!;D

I guess I'm VERY VERY spoiled or lucky...my nearest Apple Store is just 1.5 miles away! :) But even so, I don't go very often.
