my hard drive had a mechanical failure...i took it to the apple store, and they replaced my hard drive. they could not retrieve anything from my old hard drive.

i still have the broken one.

i'm looking for some suggestions on good data recovery services. i am not computer saavy, so i don't really want any software suggestions.

cheap but effective would be good. thanks!

Harry is right. All data recovery services are expensive and none of them will guaranty they can retrieve your data. However, I understand that unless the drive has suffered major physical damage, data can usually be recovered.

Regards.

I don't think your going to find much here. Data recovery is usually more business related and I don't think there's much of that here.

They're all expensive, because this type of thing requires special equipment and techniques.

TidBITS : DriveSavers to the Rescue

Drive Savers is one of the best known companies. Ten years ago, they charged $900-$2800. I believe this is typical today.

So expensive!
There is software available to buy, probably the same as they use.
Around $120 I believe. I have no clue how successful they are, but there will be reviews on the web.
