Finder can't find restored files

This spring my iMac crashed and I had to clear the internal hard drive, reinstall OS X (10.5.7), and restore my files from my Time Machine backup external hard drive. It all worked great and my files are all back, but now the search feature in Finder can't locate many of my files from before the crash. I've discovered that if I make a change to an old file (even just changing the file name in Finder), then suddenly it shows up in my search results. Otherwise, though, I'm in the dark when I don't know exactly where I put a file or folder.

My iMac is about 1.5 years old, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 3 GB RAM.

I'd really appreciate any insight or possible solutions.

Thanks!

Nate
