Partitioning a new Free Agent Go ext. HDD

Mid 12 MBP 8gb ram, Crucial M4 SSD 512gb, Sandy Bridge i7
How would I do that? Do I plug the drive in and then go to utilities and partition and then format with dual partitions - one for back ups and the other for storage? That's what I'd like to do. Is that the right process to achieve the partitioningg?

disk utility in OS X will due all of that for you. just plug it in and set it up.
