Need advice for creating a website

I created a website through iweb before and hosted it through yahoo, but took it down. I like iweb because it was very easy to use, I am a novice. I want to create a new site. Is there a better, cheaper way than using mobile me, iweb and hosting it with yahoo? Any advice would be appreciated, I don't know too much about web design.

There are free hosting services out there. Usually they place an advertising banner on the top of all of your pages, and perhaps more.

There are inexpensive hosting companies too. Currently I'm using HostGator which does have an inexpensive package starting at $4.95 per month. I'm using the next plan up.

Either way, do some research on the company you want to use. Some are much better or worse than others.

I've hand coded most of my pages, but have used iWeb for one photo trip and inserted it appropriately into my site.

I use totalchoicehosting.com which is very reliable and has excellent reviews and customer support. I was in your position about a year ago and I did copious research on the matter.

Don't use HostGator or anything like that though. They tend to have a system whereby they oversell their hosting. The average website is less than 10MB so what HostGator and other similar hosts do is offer "Unlimited hosting and bandwidth" knowing that you probably won't use much at all. Any large web site owner will pay for a specialised hosting anyway, so people who use HostGator usually just have small personal sites and HostGator get away with this dodgy practice. It can have problems of slowing down connections and your host cutting out though if too many files are stored on one drive.

totalchoicehosting is a good host because it doesn't oversell. You receive a quota of 1200MB for the starter package and you are actually guaranteed to be able to use 1200MB without any lag or anything. Always take this into consideration. This costs starting package costs $4 a month (Though I pay £2.85 because I am from the UK).

There are many good hosting companies out there and totalchoicehosting is just an example of a decent one. HostGator and HostPappa are all examples of hosts that oversell.

Another consideration (If this website is a business, etc.) is the speed it loads. You should use a hosting company in your country as loading times can be faster and there is less chance of lag.

This was all about a year ago I did this, so the market may have changed. I know they were trying to stop the "unlimited" crap, and that may have gone through. Be wary though.

I use 1and1 for all my hosting, and they've been great.
