How do the Ipod power/usb cords work

I cut one in half because I'm attempting to create a multiple usb port that can connect to the ipod. Inside the white insulator there is a foil, in that there are five groups of wires; red, white, black, green, and uninsulated. Does anyone know what these are for. I won't be posting to much detail of my project, because I want to protect my ideas.
