Hi all! I want to create a website to generate income with Google AdSense. I'm not sure on what my topic will be, but I'm leaning toward something tech related...? I will be using Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 and I have no clue on how to start. I have no clue on what type of webhost I need or what type of plan I need. I won't be selling anything or having forums, but might be having a comment box under each article so viewers can talk about how amazing my site/review is...lol. What webhosting service do you recommend? And how do I go about actually publishing and updating my site? Forgive me, I know a lot about tech, but absolutely nada about developing a website. Any help is appreciated! Thanks. Also, can someone tell me what the point of fireworks is? I have photoshop, but I don't see how Fireworks can be better for photo editing...

Hey Nickst3r...Therse lots of ideas here on the forum, just read many of the post about hosts and web design. I just redid a site for a client on 1&1. They started with a templet. Make shure you get a dynamic templet in order to have flash. The basic site has a fixed price and you can add options as you like. Im looking at this Electrickitten hosting. They also have templets or design your on page. There are several free web host also but your page may carry an Ad at the top. Lots to learn so dig in and good luck.:Blushing:

I recommend a couple of things.

1. Use the help tutorials and links with the Dreamweaver software and Adobe sites to get some ideas about how to start. It may be painful ( guys like me hate to follow instructions, right? ) but the time spent will probably pay off in the long run.

2. I can recommend Reseller Hosting, Shared Hosting, Dedicated Hosting by Surpass Hosting for web space. May not be cheapest, but their capablities and customer service are rather robust. Been with them many years and manage 8 sites with them.

Good luck.

Dreamweaver is a good choice. If you are going to design your own website from scratch, Photoshop and Dreamweaver make an excellent duo. Design the site in PS, and code it in DW. You can also use templates (such as WordPress for blogs) to get going. FW can be good as well, but I would recommend PS.

For webhosting, you will need a shared plan, since you're starting out I recommend an affordable basic shared plan (don't pay too much) that should have cPanel control panel and at least one of Fantastico, Installatron or Softaculous auto installers, which you will need if you want WordPress or other scripts (web applications, i.e. forums). This basic plan should be perfect for what you want to do.

Also avoid places that advertise "UNLIMITED" resources, and do not pay more for so-called big name hosting companies that rely on their size and advertising budget to sell, when you can get similar if not better quality hosting elsewhere for much cheaper. Also beware of hosting companies that will force you to pay annually by charging outrageously high setup costs if you want to pay monthly (i.e. Dreamhost).

No, no, no. Dreamweaver is sh*t. I am sorry, but it is just terrible. I used the MX version and the program still uses tables. I know it is hard to program it to use divs, but still. It is just shocking.

You want a website, you should learn HTML. It is really easy to learn, I taught myself. In 3 months of learning myself in the evening (There are by far enough tutorials on the internet) you can learn HTML fluently. You have to understand, HTML is pretty much written in English.

It works like this: You encase a command in the "<" and ">" tags to tell a computer that the text is a HTML command, and you write the command in. I mean, take this for example.

<b>Hello</b>

Open comman "<b>" tells us the following text is bold (b) and then "</b>" is a closing tag telling us that the bold text stops.

<p>This is a paragraph</p>

P stands for paragraph

<h1>This is a header of size 1</h1>

<body>The content of your website goes in the "body" section. This is the physical website</body>

<title>This is a website title</title>

You know the bit at the top, above the navbar, that says some text? That is the website's title.

<font color="black">Some random text</font>

Yep. You guessed what this does.

<font family="arial">Some more text</font>

The name of the font, or font "family". You can mix them as well:

<font family="verdana" color="white">Some white text with the font "verdana"</font>

<img src="hello.jpg" width="100px" height="40px" />

And image (img) which has a location (Or source - src) at hello.jpg (Or hello.gif, etc.) and has a width and height of 100 and 40 pixels (px).

For images, as there is nothing to put in between the opening <img> and closing </img> tags, we can write <img /> as shorthand. Effectively, they mean the same thing.

<font bgcolor="black" color="white">White text with a black background (bg) </font>

And website design is actually that easy! It looks a lot harder and more daunting that it actually is.

Being a bit hypocritical, once you start learning HTML it would be better to learn to use tables as they are simpler and much more intuitive to the human mind. Once you can write them fluently, try to incorporate CSS and divs and then try to be completely rid of tables in all but the most minimal of instances.

You can design a whole professional website using Photoshop and TextEdit. Go on the website in my signature at it was designed using only these 2 programs. Nothing else!

The only benefit to Dreamweaver is that it has auto-complete so if you can be bother to write "width" you can just write "w" and the auto-complete displays a little drop-down menu. Wow... Worth the odd few hundred pounds!

NICKST3R,
I suggest you to create a your website using CMS like Wordpress or Joomla(better is Wordpress).Using CMS will save your time and you don't need to have excellent designing knowledge .You want a comment box also, you should use wordpress. It will install on your server in 2 minutes. An you can make changes in its theme easily by editing CSS or you can purchase themes.

hmm Tech realted content.Because there are over millions sites which write on Technology. Hence, you must focus on quality + quantity both

I think Initially you should use shared hosting plan.
If you have strong budget you can go for VPS or dedicated server.

My suggestion-
Just Host is the cheap and the best service. You can go for 6 month or 1 year plan .Use coupon,it help you to get discount while purchasing domain and webspace.

I'm sorry, but I disagree with this statement. Yes, DW will use tables...but only if you tell it to use tables. DW fully supports divs.

But to answer the question; there is a ton of free information out on the web on basic web design. With respect to hosting, most online hosts have a FAQ, which will help you get set up as well.

Good luck!

Hold on ... you bought Adobe Dreamweaver, a $400 program, but you don't have any concept of how to write, publish, upload or host a website?

If I might suggest, from the sound of what you are proposing, what you actually want is to set up a *blog* -- an ongoing series of articles by you (perhaps adding other contributors as time goes on), with comments from readers.

If that's the case, I would recommend you look at something like Wordpress, a quantum order of magnitude simpler than reinventing the blog wheel, yet highly customizable if you wish (and tonnes of really nice templates already out there, plus an active support community).

Chas,

You just replied to an 8 month old thread. An 8 month old thread that not even the OP has replied to.;)

I always think it's sort of sad when:

- an OP posts a question/starts a thread
- well meaning folks provide some feedback
- and the OP never replies back in their own thread...either with followup comments or a thank you!:(

I'm not saying everyone has to say thanks in their own thread all the time. But at least reply once to let us know you're out there!:)

MFA sites generally don't work. It says volumes that the OP doesn't know what his site will be about, where to host it, how to upload it, how to code it, but knows he wants to make money from it and that it will probably be about technology. Good luck.
