2009 Uni-body Macbook Pro trackpad problems

My trackpad only works 50% of the time when i click on it. It works better when I click with the end of a finger rather than the side of my thumb. Other than replacing the pad does anyone have any ideas?

MacBook Pro Track Pad

it seems like a step back - the pad on my 7 year old Pro works flawlessly and smoothly and with no issues using my thumb to click.

I kind of feel the same way. I now click with my thumb the same way I did on my previous MBP. Push down until I hear the click. I'm not real big on pictures either so I am not using multitouch much. I could be missing something though...
