Final questions on installing a new, blank drive in the MBP:

To install OS X my understanding is simply to put DVD 1 in the drive, preserving files and archives, and then follow the instructions on the DVD. Is that correct? Is there any need to hold down the option key while the DVD begins to run?

With this issue answered, I'm set to move forward.

Thanks.

Once in disc utility you need to make sure your partition map scheme is "GUID partition table" and format type Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

Once your Mac has started to boot from the DVD, you don't have to hold down the C key anymore. You only need to hold it down to tell it to boot from the disc. Once the installer has begun, just follow the prompts and answer the questions/select options as needed.

My first thought is...if you have to ask this question, maybe you shouldn't be installing a new hard drive in a MBP...or formatting the drive.

But in any case, to get to "Disk Utility":

- open your hard drive
- open the applications folder
- open the utilities folder
- open the disk utility program

Good luck,

- Nick
