• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Hello,
I'm backup up some dvds becuase they are getting scratched. I have ripped htem as avi's i believe and iDVD is re-encoding them. Im' curious as to what iDVD re-encodes them to, so maybe i can not have iDVD re-encode them with a faster re-encoder. I'm trying to burn these dvds the fastest way possible and iDVD re-encoding them doesn't seem to be the fastest way. Or would Toast be faster to burn movies to a DVD? If so can toast do simple menu's? Maybe with a song, picture and a the name or something?

THanks,
Kamron

You may find it hard to get help on the topic as you are describing what appears to be an illegal activity (yes, I know it's a hotly debated topic, but the website follows US laws, and ripping commercial dvds without permission is illegal).

As a general response to what iDVD will use - and for that matter, ANY dvd authoring package, the video will be converted to mpeg1 or preferrably mpeg2 and the audio to pcm or AC3. avi is not a valid format for a dvd. to learn more - read here: DVD-Video - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
