I just put in a CD and see an Import button in the bottom right hand corner of my iTunes window. Do you have the CD selected on the left hand side under "Devices"? If you don't, the Import button will not show up.

You can just drag and drop the cd image over iTunes and it will import. You should then be able to burn a backup.

You can also adjust your preference for what iTunes should do when you insert a CD on the first tab of it's preferences.
