Getting movies into Front Row

Hey I currently have my video files stored on an external hard drive an I'm using vlc to play them. Is there anyway I can add these movie files to Front Row while reading them from my external? Or do I need to convert the video files into a format recognized by iTunes and store them on my laptops internal hard drive?

In the version I have, front row has a Video File that just links to my systems Video File in finder. It plays all formats, .mgp, .mp4, .dv, .avi..etc.
