I have a 5 year old 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 and it is beginning to make a consistent whirring sound. The noise used to kick in only occasionally, usually if lots of applications were concurrently running but now it seems to be doing it all the time.

Could it be the hard drive or a faulty fan and is there anything I can do to rectify the problem?

Thank you

Dan

It could be the hard drive or the fan making noise. Make sure you have backups of all your data - just in case it's the hard drive. If it's fan bearings that are getting noisy, the only cure for that is a new fan.
