Hey guys, thinking of upgrading the harddrive on my 13" MBP, i have the 2009 MBP. The question i have is that where can i get a good size like 320GB or 500GB harddrive for this macbook pro? Also is there a way to duplicate my current hard drive on the new hard drive? Thanks in advance and sorry im new to this macbook pro.

Check out Newegg.com for a new drive, they have great prices.

If you buy an external drive, you can back up your original to it, swap them, and have an upgraded internal drive, plus a spare backup or portable drive.

If you want an internal drive, pretty much any 2.5in SATA drive will work. If you want an external, I know the Western Digital Passport drives will work.

You can use Super Dupper to copy your HDD. You need an enclosure for the old HDD though.

Found out what a super dupper is, its a software for cloning your hdd. I bought the hdd that i stated above. My last question is, i dont need to backup my current hdd as i just purchased the laptop and really has nothing on it. Can i just install my new hdd and install osx fresh?

Regarding "Super Duper"...isn't Google wonderful! ;D

Your question...Yes you can just install the hard drive & do a fresh install of the Mac OS.

How and where does using disk utility (GUID, etc.) fit in to this fresh install process?

Reread the flow of the thread...I think that you are a bit confused.

Not confused - just want clarity.

I want to do the same thing as Zeek. I just want to do a fresh install on a new drive. Is it just a matter of running the disks and following the prompts along the way, or is there something that I need to do beyond that? Thanks.

According to my understanding, if you want to do the fresh install then i guess we have to just install the new hdd and insert the discs and follow on screen instructions. And if you want to clone meaning copy your old hdd then we need to follow the disc utility or steps or back up our old hdd through "superdupper".

Correct, pros?

Zeek & tanashus1,

Yes...if installing a new hard drive...all you have to do is:

- install the hard drive
- boot the computer from your Mac OS install disk
- go thru the installation process
- reboot the computer from the newly installed hard drive

Hope this helps,
