Is Time Capsule the only external HD compatible with Time Machine?

Your Mac's Specs
21.5 inch Imac (4gb RAM, 3.066 ghz, 500gb HDD)
I'll be getting my first Mac in the next couple of weeks. I have a 1TB external from Hitachi and I'm wondering if it's compatible with Time Machine or will i be forced to buy a time capsule.

13" MBA. 15" MBP. iPhone 4. 3G Pad 2.
I have a USB iomega HD that was used for TM on my iBook
Now using a 500 GB Firewire Formac HD for my MBP.

Plug the drive in and you will be asked if you want to use the drive for Time Machine :) done & dusted..
