I would like make a recommendation to all laptop owners. The icon battery status that is used on the mac os x just takes up too much space in the menu bar. And it does not have as many features as it should. But SlimBatteryMonitor has all the features; you would want in a battery status icon. There are many customizations that can be made to the icon, which makes it worth to try. Oh, I forgot, it's free!

I use centimeters; it seems to make things bigger than they seem. The app is free, so you got nothing to lose, if ya don't like it.

Hold down the Command key, click on hold down on the old icon, then drag it away from the menu bar, and puff, it's gone.
