Mail doesn't work after upgrade

Your Mac's Specs
OS 10.5.7, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Since I upgraded to OSX, my mail doesn't function. Whenever I click on an email address, Mail will launch, but no message window will open. Whenever I choose "Send as email" from within a Word or Acrobat document, Mail will launch, but no message will be created. The Inbox shows 59 messages, but none of them appear in the message viewer. I have to force quit the application as it will not quit on its own. Any suggestions?
