MacBook stops detecting AirPort Extreme After Restart or Update

Whenever I reset my APE, or try to update it's firmware, my MacBook stops detecting it. In Airport Utility, pressing rescan does nothing. Why is this?

27 iMac+Thunderbolt, iMac 21,
When u say reset, u mean factory reset and why is that needed. Usually a firmware update does not remove current settings - more info needed i think
