Is there any other software other then iDVD for ripping and encoding dvd ? Like on a more professional level ? maybe even free ?

Im not sure about professional, but I use mac the ripper to rip, dvd2onex to compress, and toast to burn.

iDVD is your best option for free DVD software. There are better, more professional suites out there but they cost some money.

Maybe I am a bit dense but you seem to be asking about 2 different things. Do you want to create a DVD using unprocessed linear video (DVD Authoring)? i.e. Make a DVD out of raw footage. Or do you want to take existing movies and make a copy of them. i.e. rip and encode "Before Sunset" onto a new disc.

I think you mean the former in which case I don't know of any that are free. Final Cut Pro is probably the most economical "pro" tools I know of for the Mac. Well, truth be told I do not know of any other but there probably are. Loiking through MacUpdate did not bring up any likely candidates.
