Fully updated MBP Spotlight crashes

All of a sudden I am getting Spotlight crashes, I've only got to type a couple of letters and it crashes.

I've rebooted and repaired permissions so far - also no hardware changes for several weeks.

Right - just in case this happens to anyone else.

The only way I sorted this out was a re-installation of OSX which I felt would be good. Frankly, I'm not sure it was necessary. It crashed again

What I did then was remove and replace the memory sticks swapping their slots.

I then removed all Spotlight preferences just to see if the application would run.

I then re-installed the preferences, small group at a time.

At time of writing, all works nicely again - heaven knows what caused that, because I don't.

That was my first 'problem' with my Mac, which compared with my PCs is 'reasonable' in 17 months.
