Apple is last company to provide the 'whole widget'
September 22, 2003 - 00:46 EDT Apple CEO Steve Jobs says that Apple is the last vertically integrated computer company. "Other computer makers provide one part of the solution; we're the last company providing everything," Jobs told The Independent. "With the other guys, whenever something doesn't work they all point fingers at each other -- it's the software, it's the hardware, it's the network. With us, we make the whole widget." He is referring to the fact that Apple creates every aspect of the Mac experience -- the hardware, operating system, applications, digital gadgets and even an online music store.

And those developers (me excluded :D ) can stop bitching that everything is already made, and start inventing their own ideas.

All I need is to figure out how to get my Apple laserwriter NT working again.

It just occurred Apple don't make scanners.

Yes, and to be truly vertically integrated, Apple would have to manufacture the components as well, so one could also argue that fingers could potentially be pointed at IBM, Hitachi, etc. Come to think of it, complete vertical integratioin doesn't even stop there, and instead would require Apple to not only make the components, but to actually be the source of the materials for the components themselves, but that's obviously taking it to an extreme. Regardless of the level of Apple's VI, it's still far better than what other computer companies provide.
